In Africa: Davids stumbles, Mayo goalless but victorious

With South African stars participating in continental competitions, Fadlu Davids' six-game unbeaten run came to an end, while Khanyisa Mayo's side bounced back from their defeat against Orlando Pirates.

Tanzanian outfit Simba SC suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat away to CS Constantine in a CAF Confederation Cup match on Sunday evening.

This setback followed Davids' side's strong start to the competition, where they secured a 1-0 victory over FC Bravos do Maquis. However, fortune did not favour the South African manager this time around.

After taking the lead through a 24th-minute strike by Mohammed Hussein, the Msimbazi Reds appeared on course for a second consecutive win. However, two second-half goals from their Algerian opponents ensured Simba left empty-handed.

The result sees CS Constantine move to the top of the group with six points, while Simba sit third, behind Bravos do Maquis, who edged Sfaxien 3-2 in a concurrent fixture.

Meanwhile, Mayo was unable to find the back of the net for a third successive match. Nonetheless, CR Belouizdad managed to secure a 1-0 victory over Ivorian club Stade d'Abidjan on Saturday.

The positive result places them third in Group C with three points, recovering from their 2-1 defeat to Orlando Pirates in the first round of group-stage fixtures.

Elias Mokwana's Esperance Sportive de Tunis, who began their CAF Champions League group stage campaign with an emphatic 4-0 victory over Malian outfit Djoliba AC, were unable to replicate that success.

The Tunisian giants were held to a goalless draw by G.D. Sagrada Esperanca on Friday. Mokwana was substituted in the 81st minute, making way for striker Koussay Ben Maacha.

Elsewhere, Percy Tau made an appearance off the bench as Al Ahly were held to a goalless draw by Orlando Pirates in South Africa on Saturday.

The Club of the Century remain top of Group C and will face Mayo's CR Belouizdad in their next continental clash, scheduled for Sunday, 22 December.
