New Nigeria boss' record salary 'revealed' ahead of Bafana tie

The record salary new Nigeria head coach Finidi George will be getting has now reportedly been revealed ahead of next month's big clash against Bafana Bafana.

George was formally unveiled as the new permanent coach of the Super Eagles on Monday, following a short stint as interim coach after the departure of Jose Peseiro, who led the side to the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

The 53-year-old is understood to have faced competition for the role from national team legend Emmanuel Amunike and Michael Nsien, the United States U19s coach, among other candidates.

During his unveiling, George was asked how much he would be earning monthly in his new job.

"I am not quite worried about earning even as much or even more than (predecessor Jose) Peseiro because what I'm getting is good enough for me at the moment. The moment I add value to what I'm here to do, the money will definitely come," he said, according to Nigerian outlet ACLSports

The abovementioned publication claims, though, that the tactician will earn 15 million naira (about R188 500) a month, which would make him the side's highest-paid indigenous coach of all time, with previous native coaches said to have earned about 5 million naira (about R63 500) per month at the helm.

Meanwhile, it is also reported that George's five assistant coaches have not been handed on a basic salary, and will only pocket allowances and other bonuses during their spell with the national team.

With Nigeria set to face South Africa on home soil on 7 June in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier, George admitted during the unveiling ceremony that a win would set the tone for his tenure.

"Nigeria comes first, that's what I expect from every player I invite," the coach told reporters.

"You have to play as you play in your clubs and you must commit.

"The first targets are to qualify for the World Cup and AFCON, and a win over South Africa will set the tone."
