North African giants punished for misconduct against SA sides

Two North African heavyweights have faced disciplinary action from CAF following incidents involving their supporters during recent clashes with South African opposition in the CAF Champions League.

CR Belouizdad endured a frustrating night on 26 November, as they fell 2-1 at home to Orlando Pirates in a Group C encounter.

Adding to their woes, the Algerian club was charged with misconduct after fans allegedly used smoke bombs during the match.

CAF's Disciplinary Board found the Algerian club guilty, issuing a fine of $10 000 (around R186 300).

However, half of this amount has been suspended on the condition that no similar incidents occur within the next 12 months.

Meanwhile, AS FAR were also brought under the spotlight after their 1-1 draw with Mamelodi Sundowns on 7 December.

The Moroccan club's fans were accused of using smoke bombs during the game, prompting CAF to impose a fine of $5 000 (R93 176).

In addition, the Botola Pro 1 side received a further penalty of $10 000 due to their supporters allegedly using lasers to disrupt proceedings.

CAF also addressed other issues, charging CS Sfaxien with misconduct after its supporters allegedly threw pyrotechnic devices during a Confederation Cup fixture against CS Constantine last month.

"The CAF Disciplinary Board found CS Sfaxien guilty and imposed a fine of $20 000 (R372 705); $10 000 suspended for 12 months," it confirmed in the statement.
