Mokwena speaks after Wydad stumble again with latest loss

After a disappointing weekend result, Rulani Mokwena's Wydad Athletic Club have now stumbled again with another loss in Morocco.

The side were held to a 1-1 draw with Hassania Union Sport Agadir in a league encounter on Saturday, and that result has since been followed with a 1-0 defeat to Jeunesse Sportive Soualem in the third round of the Excellence Cup.

The away side managed to grab the only goal of the game in the 39th minute, ensuring that the Red Castle went into the half-time break scratching their heads.

Mokwena's men were unable to bring the game back to level terms in the second half, while their opposition also failed to double their lead when they missed a chance to convert from the penalty spot.

The Excellence Cup is aimed at integrating U23 players into first team squads, and providing the opportunity for players to be assessed by the country's Olympic and youth teams for potential call-ups.

Speaking after the match, the South African tactician acknowledged the challenges that come with the competition.

"The tournament is very difficult and requires a lot of physical effort. The young players are still young and it is difficult for them to adapt quickly," he said, per El Botola

"I will stay here for a long time, and I will continue to develop the team more every day. I know that I will not stay here forever, but I work every day as if I will always be here."

The former Mamelodi Sundowns manager also referenced the recent comments he made expressing concern regarding the absence of fans in the stadiums, which prompted a public response from the league.

"I am in favour of how to develop the professional championship. I cannot be here and give negative opinions about the championship.

"I do not want people to misunderstand me regarding the statements I made. I appreciate the efforts being made in Morocco."
