Eto'o urged to resign from FECAFOOT

Samuel Eto'o has been urged to step down from his role as the president of the Cameroonian football federation (FECAFOOT).

Cameroon's Amateur Clubs' Association (ACFAC) has asked the Indomitable Lions legend to resign due to severe allegations, according to BBC Sport Africa.

The body voted 11-1 in favour of the motion to dismiss Eto'o after just two years in charge. The former No.9's decision to extend the term of the FECAFOOT president from four to seven years was deemed unconstitutional and anti-statutory by ACFAC.

The opposing organisation also highlighted that the new laws passed in August 2022 are yet to be published despite being approved almost a year ago.

As a result of some of the allegations, ACFAC have since sought an intervention from the country's sports minister, while they are also considering reporting the matter to FIFA.

One of the things ACFAC are concerned about is the 43-year-old's appointment as an ambassador of a sports betting company 1XBET, which is believed to be in violation of FIFA and FECAFOOT regulations. The issue was raised with FIFA and CAF last month by a Cameroonian club, UMS de Loum.

However, the Cameroonian FA insisted that the agreement with the betting company conforms to all ethical expectations, with the deal said to include sponsorship for both the men's and women's national teams, as well as the top two domestic tiers.

Moreover, ACFAC also claims that the country's football body is being manipulated by unidentified players so that bettors can make a profit from matches.

The FIFA code on such agreements stipulates, "all officials, referees, players as well as match agents and intermediaries are forbidden from participating in, either directly or indirectly, betting, gambling, lotteries or similar events or transactions related to football matches or competitions and/or any related football activities."

Anyone found guilty of breaking this rules will be subjected to "a fine of at least CHF 100 000 (R2 million) and a ban on taking part in any football related activity for a maximum of three years."
