It is believed the chase for the Spanish-born attacking midfielder began prior to the 2018 FIFA World Cup, when then-manager Atlas Lions boss Herve Renard made serious attempts to convince Diaz to join the team ahead of the tournament in Russia.

Morocco made a similar play ahead of the 2022 edition in Qatar, but were again rejected by the former AC Milan star, who was adamant he would go on to represent Spain, whom he has represented once before at senior level, in a friendly against Lithuania in 2021, during which he scored too.
However, the player has reportedly finally given up on his dream to represent his country of birth after he was snubbed yet again by the Spanish national team for the upcoming international break.
