'The game against Bafana is the game of our lives'

A former Nigeria international has stated that the Super Eagles' upcoming encounter against South Africa will be the game of their lives.

Nigeria will clash with Bafana Bafana on 7 June before taking on Benin just three days later in matchday three and four of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

The side, led by freshly-appointed Finidi George, are third in Group C with two points, with South Africa above them in second and Rwanda topping the table.

The Super Eagles will, however, have the chance to put themselves in second position if they are able to overcome Hugo Broos' charges.

The last time these sides met was in the semi-finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations when Nigeria knocked Bafana out of the tournament, winning 4-2 on penalties.

Former CAF Player of the Year Victor Ikpeba believes that Nigeria can beat the AFCON bronze medalists, but that it will not be easy.

"The game against South Africa is the game of our lives," he said per Naija News

"Finidi has the players having only recently reached the final of the AFCON, which was one of the toughest ever.

"The boys know what is at stake.

"They have to be focused and make the necessary sacrifices to ensure they beat South Africa. It won't be easy, but it can be done."
