Argentina star explains why he rejected R492m Saudi deal

An Argentina star has now revealed why he rejected an offer worth a reported R492 million per year from Saudi Arabia.

Paulo Dybala made his return to his national side in their victory over Chile in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier early on Friday morning, coming off the bench to score the last goal in a 3-0 win.

The 30-year-old last made an appearance for the Albiceleste in March last year, but will now be looking to once more becoming a regular for the team ahead of the global showpiece set to be hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico in two years' time.

The AS Roma star had the opportunity to move to the Saudi Pro League during the recent transfer window, with Al-Qadsiah believed to have offered him a three-year deal that would have seen him earn a whopping €25 million (R492 million) per season.

However, after the game against Chile, the attacker revealed that he turned down the offer because he still has big ambitions for both club and country.

"One of the reasons why I rejected Saudi Arabia was certainly that of wanting to return to the national team," he said, per RomaPress

"I feel good and I want to continue to fight and win with Argentina and with Roma.

"I know that there is a lot of competition here and not it's easy... when I play, I give 100%."

The forward also expressed how he felt after receiving a warm welcome on the back of his absence.

"The fans are incredible, this group gives a lot of happiness to people and they recognise it," Dybala continued.

"This victory is for everyone. The people have welcomed me in this way after a long time away from the Seleccion and I got goosebumps."

Another standout moment from the encounter was Dybala wearing the No. 10 shirt, which is usually worn by Lionel Messi.

The Inter Miami star is currently sidelined with an ankle injury that he sustained during the final of the 2024 Copa America.

The Roma attacker stated that it was not his decision to wear the iconic number on the back of his jersey, and that he understands the pressures that come with it.

"The decision for me to wear the 10 was made from above, it wasn't mine or my teammates'," Dybala added.

"The 10 is solely and exclusively Leo's and now that I have to wear it, I have to give it my all."
