Bayern Munich surrendered a two-goal advantage against Borussia Dortmund to draw 2-2 in Der Klassiker in the Bundesliga on Saturday evening.
The Bavarians welcomed back Benjamin Pavard and Marcel Sabitzer from their commanding display against Viktoria Plzen in midweek, with Mats Hummels and Donyell Malen restored by Dortmund.
It was a quiet opening from particularly the title holders as Dortmund worked an opening through a thumping effort from Raphael Guerreiro, which goalkeeper Manuel Neuer steered away.
Bayern were ahead against the run of play moments following the half-hour mark when Leon Goretzka picked up a low ball from Jamal Musiala and saw his effort beat a crowd of bodies to find the net.
Edin Terzic urged his charges on despite falling behind and from a turnover nearly had the comeback off a first-time shot by Malen following a through pass, but Neuer smothered the Dutchman.
Dortmund put on Marius Wolf at halftime in favour of Hummels before Kingsley Coman, Joshua Kimmich and Josip Stanisic entered for the Bavarians.
The title holders though increased their lead eight minutes following the break when Leroy Sane retrieved a loose ball on the edge of the area and drilled through the gloves of Alexander Meyer.
Bayern could've snatched a third inside the closing quarter from a snap shot by Musiala around the area following Sane's knockdown, but Meyer parried.
Instead, Dortmund pulled one back near the remaining 15 minutes as Youssoufa Moukoko latched onto a low pass from Anthony Modeste and beat Neuer with a clever finish.
Modeste should've levelled matters near full-time, but he scuffed a clear delivery from Karim Adeyemi well off target with the goal at his mercy.
There were late drama too as Bayern were reduced to ten players in stoppage time with Coman dismissed for a second bookable offence.
Dortmund used the man advantage to good effect and levelled at the death through a commanding header at the back-post by Modest, who made up for his earlier miss.
