Rampant Bayern cement top spot with Schalke thrashing

Bayern Munich 6-0 Schalke

Bayern Munich remained at the top of the Bundesliga table after thumping the relegation-threatened Schalke 6-0 on Saturday.

It didn't take the champions long to get settled in as Thomas Muller finished off a layoff from Leroy Sane before Joshua Kimmich finished off from the spot after a Video Assistant Review (VAR) intervention.

Bayern upped the ante over five minutes in the second half when Serge Gnabry latched on a low floated delivery by Joao Cancelo and applied a decent finish.

The German international secured a brace around the midway quarter with another cleverly worked finish from equally smart bit of build-up play.

With the visitors unable to get a foot-hold, the record Bundesliga holders didn't let up and had a fifth in the final ten minutes as Mathys Tel slotted in a low ball from Jamal Musiala.

Former Ajax Amsterdam man Noussair Mazraoui put their counter-parts of their misery in added time after dispatching a layoff from Sadio Mane and saw the contest to a close.

Borussia Dortmund 5-2 Monchengladbach

Borussia Dortmund remained within touching distance of the title through a dominant 5-2 victory over Borussia Monchengladbach.

Dortmund had the opener in the first five minutes through Daley Malen and quickly bagged a second from the spot courtesy of the highly-rated Jude Bellingham.

Ivorian international Sebastien Haller made it three in the opening 20 minutes with a nice finish and had a brace shortly after the half-hour mark.

Gladbach came back late in the second half through Ramy Bensebaini and Lars Stindl, but Dortmund wiped off any hopes of a comeback as Gio Reyna struck the fifth at the death.

Union Berlin 4-2 SC Freiburg

Union Berlin continued their top-four pursuit following a comprehensive 4-2 victory over fellow top-four chasers SC Freiburg.

Berlin, who once upon a time led the standings, made the breakthrough on five minutes courtesy of Kevin Behrens as the visitors struggled to settle in.

The host bagged a second in the last ten minutes towards the halftime break when Sheraldo Becker got hold of centre-back Robin Knoche's ball and thumped in.

A double followed a certain Becker shortly before the interval as another delivery from Knoche found the way of the forward who needed no second invitation.

However, Freiburg showed a bit of fight after the conclusion of halftime and goals in quick succession from Vincenzo Grifo – one from the spot forced Union to revisit their approach and momentum.

The host did just that and ensured the maximum points in closing ten minutes through Aissa Laidouni from an assist by Becker, as the contest drew to a close.

VfL Bochum 3-2 FC Augsburg

VfL Bochum strengthened their quest against relegation after securing an entertaining 3-2 victory over FC Augsburg.

Bochum needed all but two minutes to hit the front when Christopher Antwi-Adjei pounced on a nicely placed delivery and applied a decent finish.

Although, the advantage lasted but 30 minutes as the visitors clawed back after good build-up patterns saw Arne Maier pounce to level the contest.

However, a slice of good fortune restored the lead for the host shortly inside the second half after Jeffrey Gouweleeuw bundled in his own net whilst attempting a clearance.

Bochum stretched their cushion moments thereafter when a delivery from Philipp Forster saw Anthony Losilla pounce to make it 3-1.

The visitors did have a second in the remaining five minutes after Kelvin Yeboah tucked in a well-placed delivery, but it didn't instigate a comeback and Bochum claimed victory.

VfL Wolfsburg 2-1 TSG Hoffenheim

VfL Wolfsburg returned to winning ways to remain in mid-table following a 2-1 victory over TSG Hoffenheim.

Both teams keenly targeted victory as the host settled first when Jakub Kaminski picked up an assist from Ridle Baku and applied a stern finish in the opening 15 minutes.

Wolfsburg doubled their lead in the closing period after a ball from Felix Nmecha allowed Luca Waldschmidt to retrieve and bury home.

Eintracht Frankfurt 3-0 Mainz 05

Eintracht Frankfurt maintained their mid-table spot on the table with a 3-0 victory over Mainz 05 out at RheinsEnergie Stadion.

Japanese international Daichi Kamada got the host up and running with a perfectly taken spot-kick in the opening exchanges of the match.

With halftime on the horizon, Eintracht doubled their tally after a delivery from Brazilian-born Tuta connected with Aurelio Buta and the latter made no mistake.

Mainz were under immense pressure again shortly from the interval and saw the host claim a third following a comfortable finish by dangerman Randal Kolo Muani.
