Bayern bounce back with 5-0 thrashing

Bayern Munich 5-0 Freiburg

Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich returned to winning ways in emphatic fashion after hammering Freiburg 5-0 at Allianz Arena.

Bayern were boosted by the return from injuries of Aphonso Davies, Matthijs de Ligt and Serge Gnabry while Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting was recalled following their thumping win over Viktoria Plzen in the UEFA Champions League.

The hosts grabbed an early lead after Gnabry powered home header from a rebound after goalkeeper Mark Flekken initially denied Leroy Sane.

The Bavarians remained on the front foot and Choupo-Moting doubled their lead shortly after the hour-mark with a low strike under Flekken following a through ball by Sane.

Sane eventually made it 3-0 moments later with his own cracking shot after he exchanged passes with Choupo-Moting, before Sadio Mane made it 4-0 ten minutes into the second stanza after an error at the back sent him through on goal.

Marcelo Sabitzer put the icing on the cake for Bayern with the fifth goal ten minutes before time after a loose ball sent him through and he fired a strike past Flekken.

The win took the Bavarians up to second on the table, four points behind leaders Union Berlin while Freiburg dropped down to third spot.

Union Berlin 2-0 Borussia Dortmund

Union Berlin solidified their position at the top of the table after beating Borussia Dortmund 2-0 at Stadion An der Alten Forsterei.

Dortmund made four chances from their 1-1 draw against Sevilla in the UEFA Champions League, as Nico Schlotterbeck, Raphael Guerreiro, Emre Can and Youssoufa Moukoko were all recalled.

A slip by goalkeeper Gregor Kobel after receiving a back pass gifted Union the lead on eight minutes as Janik Haberer pounced to score into an empty net.

Haberer doubled the lead for Union midway through the first stanza and got his brace with a strike around the penalty against the run of play.

Edin Terzic's charges threatened to get into the game in the second stanza, although Union also had their moments to kill off the game.

Marco Reus had a big chance late in the game for Dortmund after he beat the offside trap to go through on goal but he was thwarted by goalkeeper Frederik Ronnow in a one-on-one.

The defeat saw BVB drop down to eighth on the table with 16 points while Union were four points clear at the top of the log.

FC Koln 3-2 Augsburg

Koln got back to winning ways after edging Augsburg in a five-goal thriller at RheinEnergieStadion.

Florian Niederlechner opened the scoring for Augsburg on 14 minutes and Carlos Gruezo had a goal for the visitors four minutes later chalked off by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) for offside.

Steffen Tigges eventually restored parity for Koln two minutes from the half-time break and Denis Huseinbasic gave the hosts the lead around the hour-mark.

However, Daniel Caliguiri levelled matters for Augsburg seven minutes later.

Koln leapfrogged Dortmund up to seventh on the log with a superior goal difference on 16 points while Augsburg slipped down to 12th.
