Manchester United were eliminated from the Carabao Cup at the quarter-final stage after an entertaining 4-3 loss to Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday night.
Goalkeeper Altay Bayindir, Victor Lindelof, Leny Yoro, Christian Eriksen and Antony were all handed starts by Ruben Amorim, while there was no place in the squad for Marcus Rashford for the second game in a row.
The game was played at a lively pace but the opening goal went to Spurs in the 14th minute when Dominic Solanke showed great reactions to pounce on the rebound from Pedro Porro's shot and fired in off the upright.
The Red Devils pushed to get themselves level but they struggled to carve out a chance in the Tottenham box and were restricted to efforts from distance, none of which troubled goalkeeper Fraser Foster.
That was as good at it got for the Red Devils as the North London did well to stifle their opponents at every attempt in the final third.
Spurs went on to double their lead a minute into the second period when Lisandro Martinez was unable to fully clear a cross in the box, which allowed Dejan Kulusevksi to fire home from six yards out.
The lead was extended ten minutes later as Solanke completed his brace on the night with a lovely solo effort that ended with a neat finish into the bottom corner from just inside the box.
The Red Devils did pull a goal back in the 63rd minute when substitute Joshua Zirkzee slotted into an empty net after Fernandes won the ball in the Spurs box after Fraser Forster's poor attempted pass out.
Seven minutes later, United reduced the deficit as Forster committed another big error by taking his time to clear, which allowed Amad Diallo to close him and down deflect the ball into an empty net.
United's comeback fell short as Spurs bagged a fourth goal in the 89th minute through Son Heung-min, whose in-swinging corner evaded every player and sailed into the far corner and while Evans pulled another goal back in second-half stoppage time, Spurs held on for the win and a spot in the semi-finals.
