Brazil superstar makes Lionel Messi revelation after Copa America triumph

In the aftermath of Brazil's Copa America triumph on home soil, a Selecao star opened up on having to mark Lionel Messi in the semi-finals of the competition, while battling with diarrhoea.

Tite's charges, who were without the services of injured superstar Neymar, were crowned champions of the 46th edition of the South American spectacle on Sunday night, securing a 3-1 victory over Peru in the final, courtesy of strikes by Everton, Gabriel Jesus and Richarlison.

Paris Saint-Germain defender Marquinhos played a starring role for the Selecao throughout the tournament, featuring in every single match en route to Brazil lifting the title.

The 25-year-old, was replaced by Miranda in the second-half of Brazil's 2-0 win over their arch-rivals, but came close to not featuring against the Albiceleste at all, after waking up with viral symptoms prior to the clash against Argentina.

"It was not easy, no. He was on inspired (form that) night. Not only him, as the Argentine team made a great game," he said as per Esporte.

"It was very difficult, but I think the team managed to cancel out the attacks of Argentina well.

"The ones we could not (cancel out) had some lucky chances, with balls hitting the post and Alisson made some great saves. That makes a strong and solid team," he added.

When asked about his illness, the former AS Roma star replied: "On the day of the game, I ended up (suffering from) a virus and I spent the day at the hotel.

"(It was) very complicated. (I had) diarrhoea and vomiting, I still managed to play a little, but with the effort it got worse (during the) game.

"After the game, it ended up getting worse too. I had a fever and I ended up having to go to the stadium infirmary. But I managed to get an injection and I feel better."

Brazil secured their ninth Copa title following the victory over Peru in the final and are five behind arch-rivals Argentina and six behind record champions Uruguay.
