Vinicius suspended as Brazil sent packing

Brazil crashed out of the Copa America after going down on penalties to rivals Uruguay in the quarter-finals.

With star player Vinicius Junior suspended, the Selecao banked on youngster Endrick to lead the attack before Federico Valverde, Ronald Araujo and Darwin Nunez made up La Celeste's stall.

Teen sensation Endrick got a chance to settle around the half-hour mark but instead showed the presence of mind to tee-up Raphinha, who squandered in the end.

Uruguay were unable to continue with the initial set-up but introduced Jose Maria Gimenez from the bench a little past the half-hour mark and hauled off Ronald Araujo due to injury.

It didn't affect their momentum in any way as in no less than a few minutes a ball in the six-yard area came and found the head of Liverpool's Darwin Nunez, who steered wide.

La Celeste pulled on a substitute ahead of the resumption for the second period, as Sebastian Caceres replaced Matias Vina with the Selecao unchanged.

The record holders still battled to pull into the next gear and smart ball-play by amongst Valverde led to a shot from range, but Alisson Becker had no problems parrying.

Uruguay continued to enjoy the better of the momentum later on as Maximiliano Araujo dragged high and wide following a first-time attempt.

La Celeste were reduced to ten players near the closing ten minutes after Nahitan Nandez on a pitch-side review saw a second yellow card upgraded to red for a poor challenge on Rodrygo.

There wasn't anything between the two nations in the latter stages and a penalty shoot-out came to determine who advances to the last four.

Selecao came unstuck in the shoot-out as misses from Eder Militao and Douglas Luiz led the La Celeste to victory with Manuel Ugarte netting the winning effort.
