Argentina captain Lionel Messi has made a major declaration regarding his retirement ahead of this weekend's Copa America final.
The 37-year-old got his foot on a shot by Enzo Fernandez soon after half-time to net his side's second goal against Canada and help them overcome the north Americans by two goals to nil in their semi-final early on Wednesday morning, with their other strike being scored by Manchester City's Julian Alvarez in the 22nd minute.

With Messi now plying his trade at Major League Soccer side Inter Miami, many believe he is approaching the end of what has been an illustrious career.
Some have also speculated that this Copa may be the former Barcelona star's last major international competition.
However, according to the player himself, this may not be the case.

Speaking after his side's victory over the Canadians, the former FC Barcelona talisman insisted that his intention is to continue playing for the Albiceleste beyond this tournament, and that he does not know when he will call time on his career.
"As I've said before, I intend to continue," he said, per the Standard.
"I intend to keep living day by day without thinking about what will come in the future or whether I'll continue or not.
"It's something I just live each day. I'm 37 years and only God knows when the end will be."
Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni, meanwhile, stated that the 2022 FIFA World Cup winner is welcome to the team for as long as he desires.
"We have to leave him alone, he knows that we will not be the ones to close the door on him," the manager said per Soccer America.
"He can stay with us as long as he wants, even when he retires. Let him decide what he wants."

One player who will be retiring from international football at the end of the competition, however, is former Real Madrid star Angel Di Maria.
The winger spoke after the game against Canada, confirming that the final against either Uruguay or Colombia will be his last for his country.
"It's my last battle. There's nothing left to say that I haven't said a lot of times before," Di Maria explained.
"It's my last game. I have to say thank you to all Argentineans and to this generation that has allowed me to lift so many trophies."
