Lionel Messi: We needed a game like this

Lionel Messi believes Argentina have turned the corner on their sub-par Copa America showing after the La Albiceleste booked their spot in the quarter-finals following a 2-0 victory over Qatar.

The 14-time Copa America winners came close to an embarrassing group stage exit from the South American spectacle after suffering a 2-0 defeat to Colombia in their Copa opener, before being held to a 1-1 draw by Paraguay.

Lionel Scaloni's charges, however, eased to a 2-0 victory over Qatar on Sunday to book their place in the quarter-finals, where they will face Venezuela.

Speaking after his side's first victory in the competition, the FC Barcelona talisman claimed the tournament is only beginning for Scaloni's men now.

"We played a good game and we won, and that was what mattered," Messi said, as per The National.

"We needed a game like this to gain some confidence and calm. As we play more games, the team grows each one and that game was good for that.

"The important thing was to win to keep going in the Copa, to get through the group stage. This will be an important boost for what's to come ... another Copa begins now.

"This victory must give us strength and make us grow as a team."

Argentina and Venezuela will do duty on Friday, 28 June, at the Maracana Stadium.
