3 Burnley stars 'caught' in Haaland controversy

Three Burnley stars have reportedly found themselves in some controversy involving Manchester City star Erling Haaland following their Premier League match on Friday night.

Fantasy football has been around since the 2002/03 season, and is played by millions of fans around the world, while players have also been known to create their own teams, and sometimes even include or captain themselves in it.

There have reportedly been issues with footballers and staff at Premier League clubs, however, which has previously led to team information unwittingly being leaked prior to kick-offs.

The Daily Mail has now reported that Burnley's Josh Brownhill, Jack Cork and Arijanet Muric all captained Haaland for their Fantasy Premier League teams on the past weekend, the same gameweek in which the Clarets would play against the Norwegian, who went on to score a brace against Vincent Kompany's side at Turf Moor on Friday night.

It is claimed Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford also included Haaland in his fantasy team, but decided against making the striker his captain and instead chose himself as skipper, although he conceded three goals on the night.

Brownhill was introduced in the second half against the Citizens after Haaland had already been taken off by Pep Guardiola, while Cork and Muric were unused substitutes for the home side.

With the three footballers having essentially backed Haaland to score against their own team, though, this has once again raised fears over players taking part in the digital game, which features leagues one can join to win prizes, including money.

Players and staff have previously been warned about taking part in the game, with some having been told not to select colleagues from their own clubs if they do.

Two years ago, Aston Villa banned their players from playing the digital game after a number of squad members removed Jack Grealish from their teams while there were rumours he had an injury ahead of a clash against Leicester City.
