Chelsea sensation accused of choosing money over Arsenal

Chelsea's new big-money star Mykhailo Mudryk has been accused of chasing the cash following his decision to choose the Blues over his supposed dream club Arsenal.

The Ukrainian sensation arrived at Stamford Bridge earlier this month after being heavily linked with a move to the Emirates instead.

The Gunners are believed to have made three offers for the player, but none met Shakhtar Donetsk's valuation of the explosive winger.

Chelsea swooped in at the 11th hour, agreeing a lengthy eight-and-half-year deal for a fee that could reportedly rise to €100 million (R1.8 billion) with added bonuses.

Mudryk made his debut against Liverpool on the weekend and showed glimpses of his potential in a promising 35-minute cameo that was widely well-received by pundits and fans alike.

Former Arsenal goalkeeper David Seaman was among those who were left impressed with Mudryk, but he also aimed a slight dig at the pacey talent, claiming he chose the money at Chelsea over Arsenal.

"When he came on, he looked really good, I was really impressed with a lot of his control, the way he was going past defenders, the little passes that he saw," the former England shot-stopper said on the Seaman Says podcast.

"I was thinking he looked special and I thought I would've liked him at Arsenal if I'm honest.

He's gone [to Chelsea] for the money!

"You would think that Martinelli [who would have made way for Mudryk at Arsenal] would be the one because when he came on against Liverpool he was on the left so would it be for Martinelli or as another striker.

"I'm quite happy he [Mudryk] didn't [sign for Arsenal], he would've upset the squad, I'm sure it would.

"We can't compare with people like Chelsea, Man City, Liverpool and even Man Utd on the financial side of deals.

"If we do something really special this year that puts us back up there."

The west Londoners' manager Graham Potter, meanwhile, issued a glowing review of Mudryk's debut performance.

"He's not played football for a while, he's been on a mid-season break," he said following the 0-0 draw with Liverpool, per the Metro.

"He hasn't had any game time and it would have been a risk. We had to manage his minutes, but you can see his quality.

"He was really good. He will get better the more he is with us and the more we see him and vice versa, but there were promising signs.

"He has had two [training] sessions with us but from watching him with Shakhtar Donetsk and seeing his quality, he is dangerous in one-v-one situations, he gets supporters off their seats and knows where the goal is. Our job is to help him settle in."
