Arsenal got their hands on some silverware after overcoming Manchester City on penalties in the Community Shield on Sunday evening.
Mikel Arteta unleashed big off-season signings Declan Rice, Jurrien Timber and Kai Havertz, while the Citizens began life without influential captain Ilkay Gundogan following his move to FC Barcelona.
It was the Citizens that were the more enterprising following the opening exchanges and played smartly beyond the pressing lines applied by the Gunners.
Despite having little of the possession, the Gunners did however had a big chance four minutes to the half-hour mark through a clever effort by Havertz off a through ball but Ortega Moreno parried.
The latter was at it again minutes before the break when he produced another remarkable stop to thwart the self-same Havertz following delightful build-up play.
Pep Guardiola's men looked for a quick start in the second half as a header by John Stones from a corner-kick forced goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale to a decent save.
A substitution from the treble winners followed ten minutes from the break when Phil Foden came on in the place of former Aston Villa man Jack Grealish.
The Citizens showed their quality after a subdued spell and were ahead as youngster Cole Palmer pulled a cutback and curled in the far corner 12 minutes from time.
City looked to grab a second goal through cleverly worked efforts around the area, but brave goalkeeping from Ramsdale denied Foden and Rodri Hernandez's diving header.
Arteta's men pushed for the equaliser and were rewarded in the 101st minute when a rasping shot by Leandro Trossard bounced off Manuel Akanji and wrong-footed Ortega as a penalty shoot-out followed.
The Gunners were more accurate in the shoot-out as Fabio Vieira netted the final kick to hand them the cup ahead of the start of the season next weekend.
