The 33-year-old, who now plays for second-tier Scottish outfit Greenock Morton FC, was arrested after authorities discovered an estimated 60kg of cannabis that is said to have arrive in England from Bangkok last month.

Two women were also charged in connection with the drugs, but they have since been released on bail.

Emmanuel-Thomas, meanwhile, was accused of importing class B drugs and had been detained in Inverclyde, a council area located in Scotland.

The attacking midfielder's club has not yet commented on the issue, while National Crime Agency senior investigating officer David Phillips warned the public against participating in smuggling.

"The NCA continues to work with partners like Border Force to target those involved in drug smuggling – that includes both the couriers and the organisers," Phillips said.

"We would appeal to anyone who is approached to engage in any kind of smuggling to think very carefully about the likely consequences of their actions, and the potentially life-changing risks they will be taking."

Emmanuel-Thomas began his career in London, coming up through the Gunners' youth ranks. He made five senior appearances before securing a permanent move to Ipswich Town.

He thereafter represented various clubs, a list that includes Queens Park Rangers, Bristol City and MK Dons, among others.
