Man City launch huge bid for Gundogan 'replacement'

With their former captain Ilkay Gundogan having recently joined FC Barcelona, Manchester City are now said to have launched a massive bid for his replacement.

Transfer season is really starting to take shape, with a number of high-profile signings having already taken place.

One of the more notable moves is Gundogan's transfer to Barcelona this week after he left the Citizens as a free agent on the back of a hugely successful 2022/23 campaign, which saw the side claim a continental treble.

The Premier League champions have seemingly wasted very little time in finding a replacement for the Germany international, though.

According to The Athletic's David Ornstein, City have offered a deal worth £90 million (R2.1 billion) for West Ham United star Declan Rice, consisting of £80 million (R1.8 billion) up front plus a further £10 million (R236 million) in add-ons.

This proposal is said to have prompted Arsenal to prepare a third bid for the England international after their first two bids for his signature were rejected by the Hammers.

Rice is largely expected to depart his current side after West Ham chairman David Sullivan confirmed earlier this month that they have a gentlemen's agreement to allow the player to leave despite him still having a year remaining on his contract.

Meanwhile, Manchester United are also believed to be keen to compete for Rice's services, although it remains to be seen if they will enter into the bidding war.

According to Sky Sports, however, West Ham ultimately want £120 million (R2.8 billion) for their captain.
