It is further claimed the Argentine would be open to a move away from the club in this transfer window, in a bid to secure more regular minutes – he is behind a certain Erling Haaland in the striking pecking order at the Etihad.
However, the issue Alvarez currently faces is believed to be with regards to finding a team that would pay the large transfer fee the Citizens are asking for.
it is understood that Atletico have been in contact with the attacker's agent regarding a potential move over the past few weeks.
That said, while Alvarez has been described as a dream signing for Los Rojiblancos, the player is now thought to be too expensive for them.
Reports suggest that the reigning Premier League champions have slapped a price of €70 million (around R1.4 billion) on Alvarez, plus another €20 million (R398 million) in add-ons.
Atletico are therefore believed to have ruled out a move for the player unless City lower their asking price or if the English club would be willing to accept a loan deal for his services.
The forward has just come off the back of a successful Copa America that saw his nation lift the trophy a second consecutive time.
