Pep takes aim at Arteta after feisty draw

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has taken aim at Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta following the two giants' dramatic draw on Sunday.

The match certainly lived up to its billing as one of the most eagerly anticipated fixtures on the 2024/25 Premier League football calendar.

Norwegian striker Erling Haaland opened the scoring in the ninth minute, before Arsenal's new signing Riccardo Calafiori levelled the scores just over 10 minutes later.

It was an action-packed first half as Gabriel Magalhaes headed the ball into the back of the net in added time just before the break to give the Gunners a 2-1 lead.

Minutes later, though, Leandro Trossard was sent off after picking up a second yellow card for delaying a restart after kicking the ball away, bringing Arsenal down to 10 men heading into the second half.

The London side put up a fierce resistance as City pressured them in search of an equaliser in the second stanza.

In the dying minutes of the game, when the match seemed to be slipping away from the Citizens, England international John Stones snatched a stoppage-time equaliser to earn his side a point in a thrilling 2-2 draw at the Etihad Stadium.

Guardiola, however, was not too happy with Arsenal's tactics after the team went down to 10 men, with the tactician taking aim at Arteta's methods to manage the game.

"I don't know how many [Arsenal] players went down with cramp, but that can, of course, happen in a demanding game," Guardiola told Sky Sports.

"We crossed and crossed and had Ruben [Dias], Manuel [Akanji], Erling [Haaland], but when you cross they have Declan Rice, William Saliba, Gabriel, Riccardo Calafiori, so it is so difficult.

"There were 10 players there. In the end, we got what we deserved."

Asked about apparent time-wasting from Arsenal, Guardiola responded: "Maybe I would have done the same because it is with 10 men.

"You have to ask Mikel [Arteta] what the tactic was.

"They were good with the long balls into Kai Havertz, who is so strong, and they go for the second balls.

"In the end we were patient, had the chances and got the goal. That's all."

Gunners boss Arteta, on the other hand, said he was delighted with his team's performance despite dropping two points in the dying minutes of the game.

"I am so proud of the team. We played the game in a difficult context. Playing against the best team in the world," Arsenal's manager told BBC's Match of the Day.

"After what happened we went 2-1 up – it was a different story and I prefer not to make any comment about that [Leandro Trossard's red card].

"Obviously, it is already a miracle we played 56 minutes at the Etihad with 10 men. It is unbelievable what we have done."
