Title-chasing Liverpool move 12 points of Arsenal

Liverpool 1-0 Everton

Liverpool edged closer to the Premier League title with a 1-0 win over Merseyside rivals Everton on Wednesday evening.

Arne Slot made just one change from the Reds' Carabao Cup final loss to Newcastle United three weeks ago as Curtis Jones replaced Jarell Quansah at right-back.

Everton looked to have gone ahead in the opening stages through a neat finish from a tight angle by James Tarkowski, but it was ruled out for offside.

Colombian Luis Diaz seized control for the host after a goalless opening half when he squeezed his way through two challengers to beat Jordan Pickford.

The Toffees looked to replicate the heroics of the first round clash in the earlier campaign, but the Reds pulled out a resilient approach at the back and walked away victorious.

Manchester City 2-0 Leicester City

Manchester City moved back into the top-four in the league after claiming a comfortable 2-0 victory over the struggling Leicester City.

Norwegian ace Erling Haaland was a huge miss for City who saw Jack Grealish, Jeremy Doku, Nico Gonzalez, Omar Marmoush and Savinho restored with the Foxes unchanged.

Grealish gave the host the ideal start after two minutes when he bombed in the six-yard area to finish off Savinho's timeous layoff.

Marmoush doubled the lead before the half-hour mark with a first-time finish in off the post as the Foxes struggled to clear their lines.

Southampton 1-1 Crystal Palace

Southampton ended a six-match losing run with a 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace at St Mary's Stadium.

Injuries plagued the host who had key striker Paul Onuachu lead the line, while on the other hand Chris Richards absence gave Nathaniel Clyne a rare start.

The self-same Onuachu provided the breakthrough after rising unchallenged in the centre of the six-yard box to head in a right-sided delivery.

With victory a near certainty, the Eagles rescued a point from the jaws of defeat when Brazilian Matheus Franca's angled header got the better of Aaron Ramsdale.

Newcastle United 2-1 Brentford

Carabao Cup champions Newcastle United cemented fifth spot on the table following a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Brentford.

Magpies boss Eddie Howe made no changes from the Carabao Cup final victory over Liverpool, whereas Sepp van den Berg and Yehor Yarmoliuk picked out the changes for the Bees.

In-form striker Alexander Isak set the Magpies on their way in the earlier stages of the half with a simple finish from Jacob Murphy's low cross.

The Bees responded minutes in the second half through a well-taken penalty from Bryan Mbeumo after Yoane Wissa went down from Nick Pope's challenge.

Italian international Sandro Tonali restored advantage soon before fulltime after taking a delivery from Harvey Barnes in his stride and executed with aplomb.

Brighton Hove Albion 0-3 Aston Villa

Aston Villa strengthened their top-four chances with a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Brighton Hove Albion.

On-loan Marcus Rashford continued his new lease of life at the Clarets when he made the opening from a through pass by Morgan Rodgers.

Substitute Marco Asensio made it two after finding acres of space around the six-yard box to drag Rodgers' delivery past Bart Verbruggen.

Dutchman Donyell Malen rounded up a fine evening's work in additional time with a neat finish from the tightest of angles.

Bournemouth 1-2 Ipswich Town

Ipswich Town got their first win of this calendar year after overcoming Bournemouth 2-1 to boost their fight against relegation.

Nathan Broadhead broke the deadlock half-way through the first half after skipping past Dean Huijsen to get the better of Kepa Arrizabalaga.

The visitors added to their advantage when Liam Delap came short to the area to combine with Conor Townsend and nestled the back of the net.

Brazilian international Evanilson got one back shortly before the end with a telling finish from a rebound, but it didn't inspire a comeback as the visitors claimed victory.
