Man City boost top-four push at Everton

Manchester City strengthened their top-four push in the Premier League courtesy of a 2-0 victory over Everton on Saturday afternoon.

Ederson’s injury opened a return for Stefan Ortega in the City goal while Bernardo Silva, Matheus Nunes and Savinho also earned recalls following last weekend’s win over Crystal Palace.

With a goalless draw on the cards, City came good in the last six minutes when young defender Nico O’Reily stormed in the box to guide home a cross from Nunes.

City made the points safe in additional time when Croatian Mateo Kovacic drilled a low shot from a lay-off by Ilkay Gundogan beyond the grasp of Jordan Pickford.

West Ham United 1-1 Southampton

West Ham United’s winless run of form continued after playing to a last-gasp 1-1 draw against the relegated Southampton.

Graham Potter’s boys made a buoyant start a minute after halftime as Jarrod Bowen picked up a layoff by Niklas Fullkrug and finished smartly.

Southampton snatched a point at the death when Lesley Ugochukwu guided a floated delivery from Kyle Walker-Peters past Alphonse Areola to see the points shared.

Brentford 4-2 Brighton & Hove Albion

Brentford got back to winning ways through a frenetic 4-2 victory over a ten men Brighton & Hove Albion in a mid-table battle.

Jan Paul Van Hecke was back from suspension, while Michael Kayode came in for Kristoffer Ajer as the Seagulls' sole change for the Bees.

The Bees hit the ground running after nine minutes when Bryan Mbeumo ran in-behind to finish off a timeous delivery from Keane Lewis-Potter and fired home.

Danny Welbeck got the Seagulls back on level terms minutes after halftime with a glancing header beyond the reach of Mark Flekken.

However, the Bees didn’t drop their heads and were back in the ascendancy when Mbeumo moved to the right of the area to bulge the back of the net.

Mbeumo’s influence continued a little later as he broke through on the counter-attack and set-up Yoane Wissa to make it three.

Brighton were down to ten men as Joao Pedro received a straight red card for lashing out an elbow on at Nathan Collins.

The Seagulls grabbed a second goal within the remaining nine minutes after Kaoru Mitoma latched onto a through pass from Jack Hinshelwood to finish with ease, but Christian Norgaard towered unchallenged to head home comfortably to restore the two-goal cushion.

Crystal Palace 0-0 Bournemouth

Crystal Palace and Bournemouth could not be separated for the second time this season following a goalless stalemate.

Palace were dealt a blow before the end of the first half after Chris Richards picked up a red card for a cynical challenge on Justin Kluivert.

The Cherries didn’t make use of the numerical superiority, as the boys of Oliver Glasner presented a nerve of steel to claim a point from the contest.
