Brighton do the double over Man Utd

World Cup winner Alexis Mac Allister netted a late penalty to hand Brighton Hove Albion a 1-0 win over Manchester United on Thursday night.

United coach Erik ten Hag re-shuffled the pack after the win over Aston Villa, with Antony, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Fred and Anthony Martial replacing Jadon Sancho, Tyrell Malacia, Christian Eriksen and Marcel Sabitzer.

The visitors should have been ahead in the opening two minutes when Bruno Fernandes slipped Antony one-on-one with Brighton goalkeeper Jason Steele, but the latter dragged his effort wide.

Kaoru Mitoma was kept at bay by Wan-Bissaka in the FA Cup semi-final a couple weeks ago, but the Japanese forward was the liveliest player on the field for Brighton and had their two best chances in the opening 20 minutes.

The Red Devils did carve out a couple more chances as the half went on as Rashford skipped past Caicedo before being denied by Steele, who was also on hand to thwart Antony from the resultant corner.

United had the clearer opportunities in the first half, while Brighton enjoyed most of the possession in the latter stages but they were unable to trouble goalkeeper David De Gea.

The Seagulls continued to dominate in the second half, with Mitoma seeing more of the ball of the ball down the left flank, but chances were few and far between in the final third.

United went close to pulling ahead in the 68th minute when Marcus Rashford played in Fernandes, who moved on to his right foot before forcing Steele into a fine save with a curling effort.

Brighton went even closer on 90 minutes when Alexis Mac Allister latched onto loose ball and unleashed a powerful first-time strike that was brilliantly pushed away by De Gea.

The night would belong to the Seagulls, who were awarded a penalty after the referee spotted a handball on Luke Shaw in the box, which allowed Mac Allister to step up and convert the winning goal.
