Title-chasing Chelsea bag fifth straight victory

Chelsea cemented second spot on the Premier League table with a 2-1 win over Brentford on Sunday evening.

Noni Madueke, Malo Gusto and Tosin Adarabioyo were hauled back in by the Blues, while Pedro Neto missed out through suspension.

After a tense opening, Brentford looked to take full control where Bryan Mbeumo got down the right following a through pass but Robert Sanchez narrowed him down.

Chelsea got the first meaningful chance with Nicolas Jackson charging in on the left of the area to rattle the gloves of Mark Flekken after attempting a near post conversion.

A shortage of clear-cut opportunities culminated the earlier stages though there was no lack of intent either end as Madueke's glancing from a corner-kick rolled narrowly wide.

The succession of crosses by the Blues reaped dividends as Madueke delivered from the right for Marc Cucurella to find the bottom-corner with a neat header.

Chelse were keen to maintain advantage after the break, with the Bees in a desperate quest to overturn matters completely.

Jackson came inches to adding minutes in through a near post attempt on the back of Jadon Sancho's reverse pass, but the Senegalese international snapped the chance and fired over.

Thomas Frank aimed to revitalise his charges a little from the halftime break and introduced Vitaly Janelt ahead of Mikkel Damsgaard.

Chelsea eventually extended the tally in the last ten minutes when Jackson raced onto a through pass from Enzo Fernandez, drifted right to the area and beat Flekken.

Mbeumo got a chance to halve the tally in the closing exchanges from a layoff by substitute Janelt, but the bulky forward couldn't rattle the net.

The Cameroonian did get on board a minute to the end as he fed off a loose ball by the host to go clear and scooped past Sanchez.

Chelsea were in no danger though but contained all the late pressure thrown their way and snatched a fifth straight win in the league.
