Top Slot: Liverpool open five-point lead

Liverpool opened a five-point lead at the top of the Premier League with a 2-0 win over Aston Villa on Saturday night.

Cody Gakpo, who starred midweek in the UEFA Champions League, were dropped for Darwin Nunez before Andrew Robertson stepped in to replace Konstantinos Tsimikas.

Nunez justified the recall in the opening-quarter where he picked up a loose ball from Mohamed Salah and found the back of the net after rounding goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.

The lead got overshadowed five minutes later as Conor Bradley came up off the bench to fill in for marauding right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold who had contained a knock.

Goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher made his presence felt for the host towards halftime with key stops from efforts in succession involving Amadou Onana and Diego Carlos.

No substitutions were made ahead of the second period by either side, as the Reds looked to build on their advantage from the opening spell.

Villa went close to drawing level a minute after the break through a rasping effort from a clever angle by Morgan Rogers, but he nestled wide of goal.

The margin remained tight with the Clarets gradually attempting to overturn the tally before the host on the other hand seek to hold firm.

Salah put matters beyond doubt in the final minute to fulltime with a thumping finish from the right of the box having chased down a loose ball.

Liverpool, who have been firing all cylinders in all competitions since the season commenced, enjoyed a quiet closing spell and secured the win to remain on top of the table.
