Liverpool sink Leicester to move open 7-point lead

Liverpool extended their lead at the top of the Premier League standings after thrashing Leicester City 3-1 on Thursday night.

The Reds made two changes following their win over Tottenham Hotspur in a nine-goal thriller, as Curtis Jones and Darwin Nunez were recalled, with Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo operating the wings.

Leicester had a perfect start after Jordan Ayew gave them the lead within the first six minutes with a strike in the box after he was setup by Stephy Mavididi.

Liverpool only started to get going after 20 minutes as Andrew Robertson came close to equalising with a low header that came off the post after a cross by Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Arne Slot's charges remained patient in attack and Salah also came close on the stroke of half-time with a curling shot that came off the frame of the goal, looking for the top corner.

However, Gakpo eventually levelled matters for Liverpool a moment later with a well curled shot from the edge of the box.

The Reds had an ideal start in the second stanza as just four minutes from the interval Jones gave them the lead with a tap-in from a cross by Alexis Mac Allister.

Ruud Van Nistelrooy's troops could not break off the blocks in the second stanza and Liverpool were the most threatening side to kill off the game with the second goal.

With 22 minutes to go, Gakpo thought he had made it 3-1 for the hosts after he smashed home a rebound in the box but the goal was disallowed for offside by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) after a long check.

The Foxes started to grow in the game in the closing stages but their hopes of a comeback were crushed after Salah eventually gave Slot's men a two-goal cushion with a low curler in the box across, towards the far post.

Slot rested Ryan Gravenberch in the dying minutes as Wataru Endo was given a run with the fresh legs in midfield.

Liverpool were in control in the end as they extended their lead at the top of the standings to seven points with a game in hand.
