Hat-trick hero Haaland fires Man City to victory

Erling Haaland bagged his first hat-trick of the season as Manchester City thrashed Ipswich Town 4-1 on Saturday afternoon.

There were no changes made by the defending champions following the opening day win over Chelsea last weekend, as the returning Ilkay Gundogan started on the bench.

The reigning kings were stunned on seven minutes when Sam Szmodics made the most of uncertain play to get sight of Ben Johnson's ball in-behind and tucked in off Ederson Moraes.

City received a lifeline three minutes later through a spot-kick following a foul on Savinho, with the incident approved after a pitch-side consultation – leaving Erling Haaland to execute.

The match swung completely in favour of the host two minutes later where Kevin De Bruyne pushed high to feed off a layoff from Savinho and fired in expertly.

Haaland turned on the magic yet again minutes apart after he beat Arijanet Muric to a pin-point ball in space by De Bruyne before finishing from close-range.

Belgian ace De Bruyne looked for a brace a minute to the half-hour mark when he was afforded time to get a shot in from the edge of the area, but unfortunately hit the woodwork.

De Bruyne came close again on the stroke of halftime after feeding on a layoff from Jeremy Doku and take aim inside the box, but again hit the upright.

Former Chelsea and Inter Milan midfielder Mateo Kovacic struggled to continue five minutes in the second half following a knock and was replaced by John Stones.

Ipswich battled to display the intensity from the opening minutes, as drew a superb one-hand save to deny Haaland profiting on the head and grabbing a hat-trick.

Gundogan, who spend a season out at FC Barcelona in LaLiga, was introduced with 20 minutes to go and made his second debut for the Citizens – replacing Doku.

There were no end in sight for the new boys as Haaland applied a one-touch from a loose ball outside the area and fired in the bottom-corner to eventually bag a hat-trick.

With the clash at a close, City cruised to victory and maintained a perfect start to the season as Ipswich suffered successive defeats on the return to the big time.
