Haaland hat-trick keeps Man City in title hunt

Erling Haaland's fourth hat-trick of the season helped Manchester City claim a 3-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday evening.

Kevin De Bruyne, who was a substitute in the comeback win over Tottenham Hotspur, started for City while Phil Foden was left out the squad completely.

City were eager to continue their breath-taking momentum that came good against Spurs, which saw Riyad Mahrez surge forward to bring Erling Haaland on strike, but it was cut out.

The host pushed bodies forward again around the half-hour mark after Jack Grealish robbed possession off Mario Lemina and laid off for Haaland to strike, but he failed to beat Wolves goalkeeper Jose Sa.

Haaland broke the deadlock five minutes to halftime when he got on the end of De Bruyne's clever ball on the cusp of the area and headed past Sa.

City looked to have earned a penalty-kick three minutes later with Grealish fouled off a challenge by Nathan Collins, but it wasn't awarded as the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) deemed no foul.

More work at the back was required from Collins on the stroke of halftime when the defender stepped on the goal-line and cleared De Bruyne's curling shot away from target.

There were changes aplenty from either side at the resumption, with Matheus Cunha, Pablo Sarabia and Joao Moutinho introduced for Wolves before Nathan Ake entered for Lewis on the opposite end.

City earned a penalty on 50 minutes when Ilkay Gundogan had his foot clipped by Ruben Neves following Ake's pass, and Haaland executed the resultant spot-kick past Sa.

It became a dominant affair for the host four minutes apart as Haaland latched onto a sliding pass from Mahrez following Sa's error and tucked in to complete his hat-trick.

Wolves seemed to have conceded a fourth around the midway period of the second half off a smart dink by Mahrez from De Bruyne's pass in space, but he was deemed to have strayed offside.

The visitors enjoyed no meaningful forays and conceded more chances through Gundogan's header which went wide, but they were unable to find a way past Ederson as City saw out the rest of the clash with ease.
