Arsenal throw away two-goal lead at Liverpool

Premier League leaders Arsenal let a two-goal lead slip and drew 2-2 with Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday evening.

Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson were back in the Liverpool line-up after being dropped for Chelsea, while Cody Gakpo started ahead of Darwin Nunez in the attack.

The Gunners got off to a fine start when Gabriel Martinelli got the breakthrough on eight minutes by latching onto a loose ball before finishing past Alisson Becker.

Liverpool had a chance to get back on level terms on 19 minutes when Andrew Robertson latched onto a fine pass from Fabinho before firing just wide of Aaron Ramsdale's post.

While the hosts had no joy in the attack, the Gunners went on to grab a second goal in the 28th minute when Gabriel Jesus rose above his marker to nod home Martinelli's cross.

However, Salah pulled a goal back for the home side four minutes before the break when Jordan Henderson deflected a cross to the far post for the Egyptian to stab home.

Liverpool were afforded the chance to get back on level terms after being awarded a penalty on 51 minutes for Rob Holding's foul on Diogo Jota, but they failed to capitlise as Salah put his spot-kick wide of the post.

Salah was presented with a chance to redeem himself just before the hour mark after latching onto a cross at the far post, but Ramsdale produced a fine save to deny the Egyptian.

Darwin Nunez eventually entered the field soon after as he replaced Jota, while Curtis Jones made way for Thiago Alcantara in the middle of the park.

It was all Liverpool in the second half and they should have levelled matters in the 79th minute when Salah slipped Nunez through on goal, but the Uruguayan failed to beat Ramsdale in a one-on-one.

Klopp's charges got the goal in the 87th when another substitute Roberto Firmino nodded home a cross from Alexander-Arnold for his eighth goal against the Gunners.

There were more chances for Liverpool to grab a winning goal in the closing stages, but Ramsdale pulled off some vitals to deny the likes of Salah and Ibrahim Konate as the two sides settled for a share of the spoils.
