The game of football has evolved, and so has the role of the forward, but no matter how much the desired attributes of an attacker evolves, they will always be judged on their ability to score goals.
In the 2023/24 Premier League season so far, however, some players have really struggled in that department despite having a generous amount of opportunities to do so, whether they are midfielders who often join their team's attacks or out-and-out forwards.
One of them is Wolverhampton Wanderers' Pedro Neto, who has not yet managed to open his EPL account this season despite having an expected goals tally, also commonly referred to in statistical football parlance as xG and which measures the probability of a shot resulting in a goal, of 1.2, according to Football365.
Another is Aston Villa talisman Ollie Watkins, who has an expected goals tally of 1.8, but is also yet to score in this campaign.
However, it is new Chelsea signing Nicolas Jackson who is the worst finisher in England's top flight at this stage of the season, with just one goal from an xG of 3.0.
Another perhaps surprising entry in the top 10 is Bruno Fernandes of Manchester United. He is in sixth place with just one successful strike from an expected goals tally of 2.1, and is said to have been on target with only a quarter of his shots so far in this campaign.

On the other hand, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool and West Ham United have all outperformed their xG, with the Citizens having scored 11 goals from an xG of 8.6, while Spurs have also found the back of the net 11 times, but from an xG of 7.3.
