The Catalan giants had been keen on securing the Brazil international’s signature after Neymar’s shock €222m move from Barca to PSG last month.
However, the transfer deadline came and went with Coutinho still part of the Anfield setup, and Neymar, who played alongside Coutinho on Thursday as Brazil saw off Ecuador 2-0, has revealed his compatriot’s pain at missing out on a move to the Nou Camp.
"Unfortunately, instead of being a happy time for him [Coutinho], for his family, it's a moment of anguish, disappointment and sadness," Neymar is quoted as saying by ESPN FC.
"I like to see him happy because he is a team-mate and a friend that I've had for a long time.
"He was rewarded with a goal today, for his and our joy."
