Wolves force FA Cup replay with Liverpool

Liverpool and Wolverhampton Wanderers played to a 2-2 draw on Saturday evening, which means the tie will go to a replay.

New signing Coady Gakpo was handed his Reds debut as Jurgen Klopp went for a full strength side as they began the defence of their FA Cup crown.

After a difficult opening, the Reds conceded midway inside the first half when Goncalo Guedes made full use of a mis-placed ball by Alisson Becker and slotted in an unguarded net.

The Reds failed to get out of first gear and into rhythm with the visitors keen to add to their advantage after a flying shot from range by Guedes forced Alisson to pull across the near post and parry.

Liverpool did level before halftime after Darwin Nunez made himself available and directed Trent Alexander-Arnold's superb cross into the bottom-corner.

Jurgen Klopp's men went ahead in the opening seven minutes of halftime when Mohamed Salah brought in a long ball from Toti Gomes' flick under control and applied a composed finish, with the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) approving the strike.

The Reds were caught square minutes from going ahead as a first-time ball in space set Rayan Ait-Nouri clear and on course for the leveller, but Alisson remained stern and parried.

Wolves put on three substitutes before the closing quarter of the second half, with Hwang Hee-chan, Matheus Cunha and Matheus Nunes entering the field.

Cunha and Hee-chan then combined to bring matters level when the latter received possession on the cusp of the area before rifling under the arm of Alisson.

Wolves looked to have found the winner with a back-heel finish from close-range by Toti off a ball in space, but an offside in the build-up had the effort chalked off.

Both sides went all out to seal the win as the clock ticked away, but neither outfit managed to profit and all square it finished with a replay now in sight.
