FA Cup wrap

Manchester City set up a FA Cup semi-final date with Arsenal after defeating Newcastle United 2-0 in their quarter-final clash on Sunday evening.

The Citizens were in a hurry to settle their nerves with an early goal but their best chance came in the 19th minute after Riyad Mahrez cut inside from the right and curled a strike towards the bottom corner that was parried away by Darlow at full-stretch.

Steve Bruce's charges eventually conceded a penalty ten minutes before the break after Federico Fernandez pushed Jesus blatantly inside the box. Kevin De Bruyne was assigned to the penalty spot and made no mistake from 12 yards out.

Newcastle had new found energy in the opening exchanges of the second stanza and they were gifted a chance to equalise in the 68th minute after a sloppy play at the back by City saw Dwight Gayle have a clear sight on goal from Allan Saint-Maximin's square pass but the English striker placed his shot over the bar.

The hosts paid the price for that miss as immediately thereafter, as Raheem Sterling made it 2-0 for City with a well placed strike away from Darlow after cutting inside on the right flank from second-half substitute Phil Foden's pass.

The Magpies were deflated after conceding the second goal, with the Citizens fashioning chance after chance but only to be thwarted by Darlow's heroics.

Guardiola's men were relentless in attack but the two goals were enough in the end to send them to last four, joining Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal in the semi-final draw.

Leicester City 0-1 Chelsea

Ross Barkley's second-half strike was enough to seal Chelsea's spot in the FA Cup semi-finals on Sunday evening.

It was a lively start for the home side as Youri Tielemens and Johnny Evans both went close to breaking the deadlock inside the opening 20 minutes.

The Blues, meanwhile, had to wait until the 30th minute for a clear-cut chance when Christian Pulisic saw his close-range shot turned away by Kasper Schmeichel.

Lampard opted for a triple change at the start of the second half, which certainly paid dividends as one of the substitutes, Ross Barkley, broke the deadlock in the 63rd minute with a neat finish.

The Foxes threw bodies forward in search of an equaliser, with Çaglar Söyüncü squandering a glorious chance by failing to direct his header on target in the 87th minute.

Nevertheless, the London outfit were able to see out the closing stages to seal their spot in the semi-finals, which will take place at Wembley.

Sheffield United 1-2 Arsenal

Arsenal progressed to the semi-finals of the FA Cup after Dani Ceballos netted a dramatic winner in stoppage time to seal a 2-1 victory over Sheffield United.

Sheffield were unlucky in the tenth minute to have their goal chalked off for offside by the Video Assistant Referee after John Lundstram headed home from close range McBurnie's flicked header from a corner.

Mikel Arteta's charges were struggling to deal with long balls whipped inside the danger area by the hosts but they got a lifeline midway through the first stanza after they were awarded a penalty for a foul on Lacazette by Chris Basham just inside the box.

Nicolas Pepe was entrusted with the responsibility of the spot-kick and he made no mistake with a left-footed strike that sent Henderson the wrong way and found the bottom corner

The game was struggling for momentum after a couple of injuries from both sides but Chris Wilder's troops had to replace Lundstram, who had a shoulder problem ten minutes before the break and Sander Berge came on in his place.

The Blades were spirited coming back from the break and they were unlucky again two minutes before the hour-mark after Egan squeezed in Norwood's diagonal free-kick with a header at the back post from close range but the goal was disallowed for offside in the build-up.

After absorbing the pressure for most parts of the second stanza, Arteta's men had breathing space in the last quarter of an hour, threatening with counter-attacks although they could not create clear openings.

The game stretched from end to end in the closing minutes, Sheffield finally got the equaliser three minutes before time after David McGoldrick got to the end of a loose ball from a long throw-in and struck home from close range.

However, second-half substitute Ceballos scored the winner for Arsenal in stoppage time with a clever finish at the near post after the visitors caught the Blades cold with a quick attack from the restart.
