Ex-Barca star: We'd have won more UCLs if we weren't bored

According to a former FC Barcelona star, they could have won more UEFA Champions League titles if they had not been struck by "boredom".

Ivan Rakitic represented the Catalan giants between July 2014 and September 2020, making 310 appearances for the club, finding the back of the net on 35 occasions, and providing 42 assists.

During his time with the Blaugrana, the Croatian collected four LALIGA titles, one UCL trophy, a FIFA Club World Cup, four domestic trophies, and two UEFA Super Cups.

However, according to the former Croatia international, he and his Barca teammate could have added to their trophy cabinet during that period if they were not distracted by other things outside of the sport.

"For me, with all the love and respect for the other teams, we didn't win more titles at Barcelona because of boredom and thinking about things other than football," Rakitic said on the El Pelotazo podcast, per Sportkeeda.

"I have heard many of your colleagues say that they have never seen anything like this."

Barca had opportunities to add two more UCL trophies to their cabinet, but lost to Roma in the quarter-finals of the 2017/18 campaign after winning the first leg.

Then, they were knocked out at the semi-final stage of the following season's edition of the competition by Liverpool, who would go on to win the title in 2019.

"We screwed up against Roma and Liverpool, but I'm convinced that we were affected by that boredom, of feeling too superior," Rakitic added.

"If you don't give your best, you don't win. If we had kept our hunger, we would have won one or two more Champions Leagues."
