Neymar: Casemiro is the best midfielder in the world

After Brazil sealed their spot in the 2022 FIFA World Cup last 16 on Monday, Neymar claimed that a certain Manchester United star has been "the best midfielder in the world for a long time".

The Selecao left it late against Switzerland on Monday night, when it took an 83rd-minute strike by Casemiro to break the deadlock, helping the South American giants to their first-ever victory over the Swiss at a World Cup after their previous two meetings in the competition ended in a draw.

While the European side failed to pose a real threat towards their South American opponents, registering zero shots on target, they were well-organised defensively as Brazil managed to convert only one of their 13 attempts on goal.

Some neat play between Real Madrid duo Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo was finished off by a superb volley by Casemiro, who scored his sixth goal for his country and his first at a World Cup.

Selecao superstar Neymar has since issued huge praise for the 30-year-old match-winner, insisting that the Red Devils man has been the best in his position for quite a while.

"Casemiro has been the best midfielder in the world for a long time," the Paris Saint-Germain attacker wrote on Twitter after the match.

The defensive midfielder joined United in August in a €70.65 million (R1.2 billion) deal after spending a trophy-laden nine seasons at the Santiago Bernabeu.

He won five UEFA Champions League titles with Los Blancos, including four in the space of five years.

Neymar, meanwhile, remains sidelined after picking up an ankle injury in Brazil's opening World Cup fixture against Serbia.

The PSG No. 10 has not been ruled out of the tournament, though, and is expected to recover by the time the knockout stages get underway.
