2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifying Wrap

Cristiano Ronaldo bagged a late brace to rescue Portugal as Fernando Santos' men defeated the Republic of Ireland 2-1.

Ireland put the Seleccao off with their physicality and direct football and took the lead through defender John Egan on the stroke of half-time.

After missing a penalty in the first half, Ronaldocame to the rescue for Portugal in the dying minutes as he became the outright highest goalscorer in men's international football history with the equaliser on 89 minutes before he bagged the winning goal in the 96th minute.

World champions France were held to a 1-1 draw by Bosnia Herzegovina as they had Jules Kounde sent off in the 51st minute.

Edin Dzeko had given Bosnia the lead after 36 minutes but Antoine Griezmann struck back three minutes later. Les Bleus did well in the second half playing with ten men but couldn't fashion a winner in the end.

Norway and Netherlands could not be separated as the sides played to an entertaining 1-1 draw.

Erling Braut Haaland got the better of Virgil van Dijk to sneak the ball into the far corner and give the Norwegians the lead in the 20th minute. Davy Klaasen responded for the Dutch in the 36th minute. Haaland hit the bar in the second half as the Scandinavians came away with an impressive point.

Denmark maintained their impressive winning streak with a 2-0 win over Scotland.

Daniel Wass (14') and Joakim Maehle (15') scored a minute apart as the Danes cruised to victory. It now means Kasper Hjulmand's side have scored 16 and conceded none in their World Cup qualifying camapign so far.

Croatia could not break down a stubborn Russian rearguard as the sides played out a goalless draw.

Missing Luka Modric, the Croats still had plenty of stars such as Mateo Kovacic and Nikola Vlasic in their ranks but could not penetrate the Russian defence despite enjoying a healthy majority of possession.

Montenegro fought back to claim an unlikely 2-2 draw with Turkey on Wedneday evening.

Turkey raced ahead through goals from Cengiz Under (9') and Yusuf Yazici (30'). Adam Marusic responded five minutes before half-time before Risto Radunovic popped up in the seventh minute of injury time to grab a dramatic last-gasp equaliser.
