2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifying Wrap

Portugal secured a 3-1 win over Turkey in their FIFA World Cup play-off tie on Thursday night.

The hosts broke the deadlock in the 15th minute, with Otavio getting his first goal for the national side in his third appearance.

The lead was doubled just before the halftime break as Otavio turned provider to pick out Diogo Jota to fire past Ugurcan Cakir.

Turkey gave themselves a lifeline when Burak Yilmaz pulled a goal in the 65th minute, however the Turkish striker missed a penalty in the 85th minute.

However, Matheues Nunes ended any hopes of Turkey comeback after restoring his side's two-goal lead in second-half stoppage time.

Gareth Bale played a starring role as Wales defeated Austria in the first leg on Thursday night.

Bale gifted the home side the lead after 25 minutes gone in the first with a wonderful free-kick that gave Heinz Linder no chance.

It got better for the hosts six minutes after the halftime break when Bale completed his brace with a close-range finish after Austria failed to deal with a corner.

Austria did manage to grab a goal after the hour mark, with Marcel Sabitzer finding the back of the net.

North Macedonia caused the biggest upset on the night after defeating European champions Italy 1-0.

Aleksandar Trajkovski was the unlikely hero for the Macedonians after scoring the winning goal in the 92nd minute.

The win sees Macedonia set up a clash with Portugal for a spot at the World Cup while Italy miss out consecutive tournaments.

Sweden squeezed into the final play-off round with a 1-0 win over Czech Republic on Thursday night.

The game would be decided in extra-time after the two sides drew a blank in 90 minutes.

Robin Quaison was the hero for the Swedes with his strike in the 110th minute, which set a up a clash with Poland in the final round.
