England thrash Wales to book Last 16 spot

England advanced to the FIFA World Cup round 16 as group winners registering a 3-0 win over Wales on Tuesday night.

Three Lions tactician Gareth Southgate handed starts to Phil Foden, Jordan Henderson, Kyle Walker and Marcus Rashford.

England only only needed a point to qualify while the Welsh knew anything less than a win would spell the end of their campaign.

Wales were able to hold England for the opening 45 minutes, although they struggled to carve out any chances at Jordan Pickford's goal.

England took control in the second half and went ahead through Rashford's thunderous free-kick that gave Danny Ward no chance in the Wales goal.

A minute later, England bagged their second goal as Foden marked his first World Cup start with a goal by guiding home Harry Kane's superb cross.

Rashford wrapped up proceedings in the 68th minute after latching onto a ball over the top, before beating two challenges before firing through the legs of Ward.

Southgate's charges will now do battle with African champions Senegal in the round of 16 this weekend.

Elsewhere in Group B, United States sealed their passage to the round of 16 after defeating Iran 1-0 at the Al Thumama Stadium.

These two sides did met at the 1998 World Cup, where Iran ran out 2-1 winners in Lyon.

However, there would be no repeat this time around after Christian Pulisic grabbed the game's only goal just before the halftime break.

The Chelsea star put his body on the line to force home a cross from Sergino Dest, which resulted in the winger being forced off with an injury.

Iran, who were without the suspended Alireza Jahanbakhsh, had no way back into the encounter despite only needing the point to qualify for the next round.

The Americans defended in numbers and held firm until the final whistle to secure their spot knockout stages for the first time since the 2014 World Cup.

USA will face the Netherlands, who secured top spot in Group A on Tuesday evening.
