Argentina slams 'useless' referee after World Cup win

An Argentina star has hit out at referee Antonio Mateu Lahoz and labelled him "useless" after the FIFA World Cup quarter-final win.

Argentina defeated the Dutch on penalties to secure progression to the semi-finals, where they will face Croatia.

The contest did get a bit out of hand at times, with both teams needing to be separated after a couple big clashes.

The Aston Villa shot-stopper also took issue with the referee's display and felt he wanted the Dutch to win.

"I thought we controlled the game really well. We went 2-0 up but the ref started to give everything to them," Martinez said, as per ESPN.

"All of a sudden a good header for them and all turned upside down. The ref added 10 minutes for no reason.

"He gave free kicks outside the box for them two, three times. He just wanted them to score, that's basically it, so hopefully we don't have that ref anymore. He's useless."

Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez was the hero after saving two penalties in the shoot-out and he had a little message for Louis van Gaal.

"I heard Van Gaal saying 'we've got an advantage on penalties, if we go to penalties we win."

"I think he needs to keep his mouth shut."
