France eliminate England to set up tie with Morocco

Reigning world champions France will meet Morocco in the FIFA World Cup semi-finals after defeating England 2-1 on Saturday night.

The Three Lions made no alterations from their dominant display against Senegal in the last 16, and the reigning champions carried no changes too after their win over Poland.

It took the title holders 17 minutes to go ahead when Aurelien Tchouameni opened space outside the area and collected a pass from Antoine Griezmann to pick out the bottom corner.

England pushed to a fast response and very nearly earned their rewards from a galloping move and subsequent snap-shot in the area by Harry Kane, but Les Blues smothered their lines.

More threats on Les Blues from the English followed earlier in the second half where a flying volley from Jude Bellingham off a tee-up by Luke Shaw worked a palm from Hugo Lloris.

Tchouameni, who netted the opener, turned villain seven minutes after the break as he clipped Bukayo Saka in the area and conceded a penalty, which Kane tucked away and made it 1-1.

Gareth Southgate's men though very nearly surrendered again minutes later with a low shot from range by Adrien Rabiot following Jules Kounde's long ball, but goalkeeper Jordan Pickford parried.

Les Blues nevertheless reclaimed the lead in the remaining 12 minutes where a loose ball from a corner had Olivier Giroud jump ahead of Harry Maguire to head past Pickford.

With Raheem Sterling and Mason Mount introduced, the English got another penalty after Mount succumbed to a challenge from Theo Hernandez after a Video Assistant Referee (VAR), but Kane missed this time around by firing well over the crossbar.

England made a desperate push for the equaliser in the closing seconds, but entries from Shaw and Sterling weren't effective and earned Les Blues victory and passage to semi-finals.
