Ghana hit back at World Cup corruption claims

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has threatened to take legal action against those spewing claims of corruption against the organisation following the Black Stars' exit from the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Ghana were disappointingly eliminated from the first round of the World Cup earlier this month following a 2-0 defeat to bitter rivals Uruguay.

The GFA has since come under fire following the national team's early exit, with allegations of corruption and interference with player selection having been aimed at the football body.

According to GHANAsoccernet, some have even claimed that Ghana management committee members received $100 000 (R1.7 million) each after the team's departure from the tournament, while a sizeable amount of monies was also said to have been given to top brass officials in the association.

However, the GFA has since hit out at those making defamatory allegations against them, threatening legal action where necessary.

An official statement read: "Unfortunately, the Ghana Football Association has noticed that a few persons are deliberately maligning and defaming the GFA and the Black Stars brand in an attempt to manufacture a non-existent scandal about the team.

"While the Association will continue to encourage feedback and opinions (devoid of insults, personal attacks, and brand devaluation), the protection of the brands from deliberate lies, misinformation and defamatory comments must be curbed, as the Black Stars remains a global brand that unites all Ghanaians.

"The Ghana Football Association has therefore instructed its lawyers to institute legal action against persons who defame the Association, its officials, products and destroy the Black Stars brand as well as the media platforms used to do the same.

"The legal forum will provide the opportunity for these persons to bring any evidence to substantiate their allegations.

"The Association will continue to encourage opinions and comments being expressed aimed at improving the team and the brand."
