Punished: More World Cup nations sanctioned by FIFA

FIFA has now sanctioned another three 2022 FIFA World Cup nations after several disciplinary breaches of the tournament's rules.

Croatia, Serbia and Saudi Arabia have become the latest teams to be punished by FIFA after Senegal and Germany were both fined for failing to bring a player with their manager to a pre-match press conference.

Of the trio, quarter-finalists Croatia are the only remaining team in Qatar as they get ready to take on an inspired Brazil on Friday evening.

Ahead of the match, though, they received the heftiest punishment of the three, with FIFA imposing a CHF 50 000 (about R920 000) fine on them after their fans verbally abused Canada goalkeeper Milan Borjan and brandished a derogatory banner aimed at the shot-stopper during a Group F game.

Borjan, who is of Serbian-Croatian descent, was insulted due to his ethnic background and for having fled Croatia in 1995 with his family on tractors.

Supporters of the 2018 World Cup runners-up had unfurled a banner featuring a John Deere tractor and changed the advertising slogan to insult Borjan.

In a statement, FIFA said: "The Croatian Football Federation has been fined CHF 50 000 for breaches related to article 16 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code (use of words and objects to transmit a message that is not appropriate for a sports event) in relation to the behaviour of Croatian supporters during the Croatia v. Canada FIFA World Cup match on 27 November."

Their European counterparts Serbia have also been punished for a flag, one that was hung in their dressing room showing Kosovo as part of their country, along with the message: "We do not surrender".

The image has since gone viral after it was shared by Kosovo's minister of culture, youth and sport Hajrulla Ceku.

FIFA said: "The Football Association of Serbia has been fined CHF 20 000 (R366 978) for breaches related to article 11 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code and article 4 of the Regulations for the FIFA World Cup 2022 in relation to a flag displayed in its dressing room on the occasion of the Brazil v. Serbia FIFA World Cup match on 24 November."

Meanwhile, the Saudis, who staged an iconic victory over Argentina in their opening game in Qatar, also found themselves on the wrong side of the rules after registering six bookings in two matches.

FIFA explained: "The Saudi Arabian Football Association has received two fines of CHF 15 000 (R275 233) for the misconduct of its team (a total of six bookings received by Saudi players) during the FIFA World Cup matches against Argentina and Mexico on 22 November and 30 November, respectively."
