Wales to change their name after the World Cup?

There are more than seven footballing nations that have changed their names in their past, including the likes of the Netherlands and Cabo Verde.

Wales are reportedly looking to follow suit, with the country's football association weighing up whether or not they should change their name to "Cymru", the Welsh spelling for "Wales".

The issue was brought up after the nation was drawn against Turkiye for the 2024 UEFA European Championship qualifiers.

The nation previously known as Turkey changed its name from the Anglicised version to the Turkish pronunciation earlier this year.

According to Noel Mooney, chief executive of the Football Association of Wales, talk regarding the name change will continue in earnest when the World Cup ends.

"The team should always be called Cymru that's what we call it here," Mooney said, per ESPN.

"Our view at the moment is that, domestically, we're clearly called Cymru. That's what we call our national teams.

"If you look at our website, how we talk about ourselves, we are very much Cymru.

"Internationally, we feel we have a bit more work to do yet. So we are going to this World Cup as Wales.

"But I think 2023 will be a year when we have a good discussion with all the different stakeholders."
