Mapeza takes over from Croatian tactician Zdravko Logarusic who was relieved of his duties after the Warriors' 1-0 loss to Ethiopia in the last international break.
The former Chippa United tactician will have Aston Villa midfielder Marvelous Nakamba back in the squad after missing the opening two qualifiers.
The Warriors take on the Black Stars on 9 October at the Cape Coast Stadium before travelling to Harare for the reverse fixture at the National Sports Stadium.
The Zimbabwe Football Association also announced that their request to have fans at the stadium was rejected by CAF.
