Chelsea had extended Giroud's contract last month for a year until June 2022, but the forward seemingly preferred a move away from the Blues after falling out of favour last season, with just eight Premier League starts in the 2020/21 campaign.

The French striker is not the only player to have left Stamford Bridge on the weekend, though, with Ivory Coast-born central defender Marc Guehi completing a €23 million (R398 million) move to Patrick Vieira's Crystal Palace.

In the Netherlands' Eredivisie, Feyenoord star Steven Berghuis joined arch-rivals Ajax Amsterdam for just €5.5 million (R93 million). The winger contributed to 151 goals and assists in just 199 games for Feyenoord, and helped them win their first league title since the 1998/99 campaign in 2017.

Elsewhere, Barcelona announced that one of their highly rated La Masia products, Monchu, would be moving to LaLiga outfit Granada on a free deal, which includes a reported 50% of any future sale as well as right of first refusal and a buyback option for the 21-year-old.
