Eto'o-led Fecafoot denies Onana smear campaign

The Samuel Eto'o-led Cameroon Football Federation (Fecafoot) has labelled those accusing the organisation of running a smear campaign against Manchester United goalkeeper André Onana as "small minds".

Onana is currently under heavy criticism at Old Trafford, with the shot-stopper recently dropped from the starting line-up during United’s 4-1 defeat to Newcastle United on Sunday.

The decision followed another high-profile error by Onana in the Europa League clash against Olympique Lyon, which led to the French side equalising in stoppage time to end the game 2-2 last Thursday.

Fans, pundits, and media outlets across Europe have been heavily critical of the 29-year-old.

However, it has now emerged that some in Cameroon are blaming Fecafoot for Onana’s bad publicity, insisting the organisation is involved in a smear campaign against the Indomitable Lions’ number one.

Fecafoot’s head of communications, Jean Marie Nkoussa Nkoussa, issued a statement slamming their detractors for making such accusations, according to CamFoot.com.

The Fecafoot official said: "Good evening everyone. André Onana has club problems like all professional footballers at one point or another in their career.

"At the start of the season, it was [Kylian] Mbappé's turn. I have never read that the FFF [France Football Federation] pays journalists to smear him.

"Here at home, small minds, driven by the constant search for conflict to satisfy their petty, basely human interests, are spreading the idea among public opinion that FECAFOOT is maintaining a cabal—which is, moreover, abject—against one of its best ambassadors, an ambassador of Cameroon.

"A time will come when the masks will fall. Everything has an end. Total support Onana."
