The England star, who has signed a five-year deal in Madrid, was claimed to be interested in the idea of starting afresh in the Spanish capital, and now, after coming up through Chelsea's youth ranks and making 95 senior appearances for the club, the 24-year-old will have the opportunity to do so.
It was suggested that the Blues made a move to keep him at Stamford Bridge by offering him a new contract that came with an increase in salary, but Gallagher is believed to have rejected the proposal because it was only for two years.
With an eye on the exit door, Premier League rivals Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur were both understood be interested in acquiring his services, with the former reportedly submitting a better offer than Atletico's.
However, the midfielder rejected the opportunity to move to Villa, while Chelsea were also claimed to be opposed to the idea of selling the England midfielder to a domestic rival.
Although there was a major delay in the transfer after striker Samu Omorodion's switch to the Blues from the Rojiblancos fell through, which saw Gallagher return to London from Madrid after a few days of waiting, his move to Atletico has now been successfully completed.
